About our soaps
Why do you use the traditional cold processed method? Soap is a combination of an alkali solution with a base of oils and, in order for these to mix, some heat is needed. The cold processed method uses much lower temperatures than those used in industrial methods, which involve boiling. The advantage of this process is that the glycerine (a natural moisturiser) is stirred back into the mixture creating a soap which is much gentler to the skin. Our soap bars will also last much longer although they give off a luxurious fluffy lather for us to enjoy.
What are the ingredients? Depending on the type of soap, they contain a mixture of the following ingredients: Scottish distilled water, glycerine, cocoa butter, lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide for the liquid soaps), natural essential oils for their glorious scents and therapeutic properties, as well as a range of pigments for colour. We often add ingredients, such as Scots oatmeal, fruit extracts, seeds and Scottish honey. We do not use any animal fats (tallow) which are contained in most commercial soaps and our products are not tested on animals.
Where do you produce your soaps? Our workshop is in Edinburgh (Scotland), where a small group of passionate soap makers mix ingredients, stirring by hand. We follow new and traditional recipes and work on small batches, an equivalent of about 100 bars per batch, which assures that our customers are always getting a fresh product. We use low-tech moulds and cutting equipment in a sparkling and relaxing workspace. At the end of the process the hand cut soap bars cure on wooden racks for up to 6 weeks.
What packaging are you using? We use minimal packaging to avoid unnecessary waste. The soap bars are wrapped in paper and our liquid soaps are bottled in either recycled bottles or recyclable PET pump bottles. The lip balm comes in an aluminium box which is also recyclable.
